What a partial hospitalization program is

A partial hospitalization program, or PHP, is the most structured level of care outside of living on campus. You spend the bulk of your day in clinical programming — therapy, groups, and recovery education — and then go home in the evening. It gives you close clinical support while you start practicing recovery in real life instead of in a controlled setting.

PHP is usually the next step after residential treatment. It’s also a starting point for people who need serious structure but don’t require 24-hour supervision.

How PHP works

Programming runs during the day, most days of the week, with evenings and nights spent at home or in supportive housing. Your exact schedule is set by your care team based on your needs, your work and family obligations, and what your insurance authorizes. Call us and we’ll tell you what your schedule would actually look like.

What PHP includes

Individual therapy to keep working the underlying issues, not just the symptoms
Group therapy for shared insight, accountability, and connection rooted in 12-step principles
Recovery education covering relapse prevention, triggers, and coping strategies
Support for co-occurring conditions, including mental health care alongside substance use treatment
Family involvement so the people around you are part of the plan
Case management to help sort out housing, work, and logistical obstacles

The three things outpatient care is built around

Resilience — coping skills

Learn strategies to handle stress and triggers so you can stay strong in your sobriety, even when life gets tough.

Responsibility — vocational training

Practical tools and coaching to help you find and maintain employment to support your new life.

Relationships — family integration

Reconnect with loved ones and rebuild healthy relationships, with guidance and support for everyone involved.

The hardest part of recovery usually isn’t treatment. It’s the first weeks back in ordinary life. PHP exists so you’re not doing that part alone.

PHP or IOP: which one do you need?

Both are outpatient. The difference is intensity. PHP is a full-day commitment with close clinical oversight, and it’s the right fit right after residential care or when symptoms are still significant. IOP is a lighter schedule built to fit around a job, school, or family, and it’s usually where you go after PHP.

Most people move through both. Your care team recommends the step-down that matches where you actually are, not a fixed timeline.

Who PHP is right for

PHP tends to be the right fit if you’ve just completed residential treatment and stepping straight into everyday life feels too fast, if you have a stable and sober place to sleep but need daily clinical structure, or if you’re managing a mental health condition alongside the substance use. We treat both together — see our dual diagnosis care.

Frequently asked questions

How is PHP different from residential rehab?

In residential treatment you live on campus with 24/7 supervision. In PHP you attend clinical programming during the day and go home at night. It’s a step down in supervision, not a step down in seriousness.

Do I have to complete residential treatment first?

No. Many people step into PHP from residential care, but you can start at PHP if that’s the right level of care for you. We assess that before admission.

Can I keep working while in PHP?

PHP is a substantial daytime commitment, so full-time work is usually difficult. If you need to keep working, IOP is often the better fit. Call us and we’ll help you figure out which one works.

How long does PHP last?

It depends on your progress and your insurance authorization. Your care team reviews it with you regularly and recommends stepping down when you’re ready.

Do you accept insurance for PHP?

We accept Ambetter, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and UnitedHealthcare, plus Medicaid and private pay. Call (931) 410-6400 and we can verify your benefits.

What comes after PHP?

Most people step down into IOP and then stay connected through our alumni program.

Not sure which level of care you need?

Call us and we’ll walk through your situation honestly. No pressure, no sales pitch.
